Marriage Counseling Tips: Can a Pet Help a Marriage Succeed? by Stan Dubin
We're all familiar with the emails that make their way around the net that tell a story compelling enough for us to forward the email along
to our friends. Some of these emails tell a hilarious story; some inspire us to do something kind, compassionate or perhaps even adventurous. We do love stories!
I recently received one of those emails and it was about a very grumpy father (in his 60s) and his daughter's attempt to bring some joy and peace of mind to her dad.
And as the title of this article suggests, it was about a pet.
Now, I realize not everyone is a pet lover. And I certainly respect that. I grew up without any pets in the house and I always felt I missed out on something. So when I
got my own place (a beat-up apartment above a restaurant that had fabulous French Fries), one of the first things I did was get a dog. It wasn't a pure bred, but he
sure didn't know it, and he and I had a fabulous relationship.
Some years later, my fiance and I were sitting outside chatting away when a stray dog came by and befriended us. We gave the little fella a bit to eat and she
decided right there on the spot that we were an acceptable couple for her new home. (Yes, we tried to find her owners but were not successful.)
My wife and I have been married for 28 years and during that entire time, we have almost always had a wonderful pet, sometimes two. Our daughter was thrilled
whenever there were puppies and/or kittens to take care of.
For me personally, I really enjoy the friendship that can exist between a dog and a person. And I'm sure for others a cat or even a bird can bring a great friendship into
being.
But I also observed a very interesting effect a pet had on my marriage. My wife and I love dogs and this was a strong point of agreement between us. There have
been times when my wife and I were upset with each other and our dog would come between us and do one of two things: 1) she'd bark at us with this commanding
intention that we stop fighting or 2) she'd come right into the middle of us if we were in bed or on the couch and snuggle up next to both of us. Invariably my wife and
I would step back and start laughing, realizing that our dog was doing what she could do to end the upset.
Beyond the "marriage counselor" role that our dogs have played, they have always been considered a part of the family. And this bond had a very positive effect on
the bond that existed between my wife and I and with our daughter.
Anything that increases reality and agreement between people will also increase the affinity and communication. This principle (of the effect Affinity, Reality and
Communication have on each other) is discussed in greater detail in this article. http://www.marriagesuccess.com/arc.html

29 Aug 2008 at 3:23pm John McCain Picks His Vice President! Breaking Newsgangshabi 10 min - Aug 29, 2008McCain makes VP pick. Sen. John McCain announces Gov. Sarah Palin as his pick for vice president. In just two years, Alaska's governor has gone from small-town mayor to McCain's VP choice. McCain's veep choice is historic. In two short years, Sarah Palin moved from small-town mayor with a taste for mooseburgers to the governor's office and now ? making history ? to John McCain's side as the first female running mate on a Republican presidential ticket. McCain picked an independent figure in his own mold, one who has taken on Alaska's powerful oil industry and, at age 44, is three years younger than Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and a generation younger than McCain, 72. McCain passed over many other better known prospects, some of whom had been the subject of intense speculation for weeks or months. She brings a strong anti-abortion stance to the ticket and opposes gay marriage ? constitutionally banned in Alaska before her time ? but exercised a veto that essentially granted benefits to gay state employees and their partners. "She knows where she comes from, and she knows who she works for," McCain said in introducing her to an Ohio rally. "She stands up for what's right, and she doesn't let anyone tell her to sit down." He said: "She's exactly who I need." Said Palin: "I didn't get into government to do the safe and easy things. A ship in harbor is safe, but that's not why the ship is built." Palin lives in Wasilla, a town of 6,500 about 30 miles north of Anchorage, with her husband, Todd, a blue-collar North Slope oil worker who won the 2007 Iron Dog, a 1,900-mile snowmobile race. He is part Yup'ik Eskimo. The two have spent summers fishing commercially for salmon, an enterprise that once left her with broken fingers aboard their boat. Palin, who led the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at her high school, could help McCain's standing with social conservatives who have been skeptical of him. "It's an absolutely brilliant choice," said Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law and founder of the legal group Liberty Counsel, who has sought to coalesce evangelicals around McCain. "This will absolutely energize McCain's campaign and energize conservatives." Palin is "a woman of faith who has a strong position on life, a consistent opinion on judges," Staver said. "She's the complete package." Four months into her most recent pregnancy, Palin learned the child would have Down syndrome, and she said she never had any doubts about whether she would have the baby. "We understand that every innocent life has wonderful potential," Palin said earlier this year in describing what she and her husband had confronted. Trig, her fifth child, was born in April. Alaska's first female governor arrived at the Capitol in 2006 on an ethics reform platform after defeating two former governors in the primary and general elections. In the primary, Palin defeated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski, who also had 22 years of experience in the U.S. Senate. Read more...

15 Feb 2008 at 11:02am La Lupe Tributejohnxxx20000 3 min - Feb 15, 2008Here is a famous song performed by the legendary La Lupe. La Lupe, or La Yiyiyi (born Lupe Victoria Yolí Raymond in Santiago de Cuba, 1939 - 1992), was a Cuban Latin and Salsa singer. Just like her counterpart, Celia Cruz, she qualified as a schoolteacher before she became a singer. She married in 1958 and formed a musical trio with her husband Eulogio "Yoyo" Reyes and another female singer. This group "Los Tropicuba" broke up with the marriage in 1960. She began to perform her own act at a small nightclub in Havana, "La Red", and acquired a devoted following also appearing on radio. She released her first album, "Con el Diablo en el Cuerpo" ("With the Devil Inside") in 1961. Her expressive performances with their violent sexuality attracted criticism and this led to professional difficulties which together with personal problems made it difficult to stay in Cuba. In 1962 she found herself exiled to the United States. In New York City she performed at a cabaret named "La Barraca", where she was discovered by Mongo Santamaria and started a new career, making more than 10 records in five years. Her passionate performances covered the range of music: son montuno, bolero, Guantanamera venturing into other Caribbean styles like merengue, boogaloo, Venezuelan Golpe Tocuyano, Colombian plena, Puerto Rican bomba, busamba, salsa. In the sixties she was the most acclaimed Latin singer in New York City due to her partnership with Tito Puente. She was the first Latin singer to sell out a concert at Madison Square Garden. She also did a wide variety of cover versions in either Spanish or accented English, including "Yesterday", "Dominique" by The Singing Nun, "Twist & Shout", "Unchained Melody", "Fever" and "America" from "West Side Story". She is interred in Saint Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx. In the 1990's, interest in her music was re-sparked when Pedro Almodóvar included "Puro Teatro", one of her boleros of love and breakup in his film classic "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown". She is often compared to American singer Judy Garland -- for her strong, yet raspy voice, and her energetic and unpredictable stage performances -- with a dash of Eartha Kitt. In 2002, New York City renamed East 140th Street in The Bronx as La Lupe Way in her memory. After seeing one of her live performances, it is reported that Pablo Picasso declared her a musical genius. The French philosopher Sartre would call her a musical animal and Hemingway a creature of art and frenesy. Enjoy La Lupe's artistry! Read more...
2 Jan 2008 at 8:33am Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds tie the knotUPIVideo 2 min - Jan 2, 2008Hello I'm Rebecca Field with a UPI entertainment update on this Wednesday the 2 of January 2007. Actor Eddie Murphy and film executive Tracey Edmonds have tied the knot. People magazine says the pair said their vows on New Years day on an island off Bora Bora. It was apparently a very intimate ceremony, with only 25 friends and family members in attendance. The wedding took place at sunset, with Edmonds walking down the aisle on the beach barefoot. The two have been dating since fall of 2006. Actors Eric Winter and Roselyn Sanchez are engaged. Sanchez's rep says they made it official during a recent vacation to an island east of Puerto Rico. The actors have been dating for two years now. Sanchez stars in the CBS show "Without a Trace" and Winter has appeared in several TV shows. Madonna reportedly rang in the New Year in a small village in India. The pop star and her husband Guy Ritchie, chartered a plane with a group of friends to Rajasthan. The area is known for its historic palaces. Sources say the pop star will be there for 5 or 6 days. There's reportedly tight security at all the hotels where the singer is staying. Meanwhile, more than one million people gathered at New York's Times Square on New Years Eve to watch the ball drop. It was the 100 anniversary of the event. The celebration was hosted by Dick Clark and "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest. Revelers were treated to performances by big stars like Carrie Underwood and Miley Cyrus. This years' crystal ball reportedly weighed more than 1400 pounds. British rock band Led Zepplin reportedly plans to play at the music festival Bonnaroo. A British newspaper says they're talking about joining the lineup at the Tennessee festival in June. The band performed together in London earlier this month...marking the first time they've played a full set together since 1980. Fans are hoping Led Zepplin will get back together and consider a full tour. That's all for now. Check out a new special segment on upi.com called "Nothing But Hope." Thanks for watching, have a great day. Read more...
